Reduces Biodiversity in the Ecosystem
The fringed water lily is an invasive non-native aquatic plant that can cover large areas of the water’s surface and outcompete native aquatic plants.
This, in turn, alters habitats in the water, which affects aquatic animals. The fringed water lily changes and reduces the biodiversity in the ecosystem.
What you can do
- Do not take boats or canoes through or near fringed water lilies, as the plant spreads very easily
- Do not swim through groups of lilies due to the risk of drowning. Additionally, do not pick up or move the fringed water lily
- If you find a fringed water lily, please report it at www.invasivaarter.nu
Characteristics
The fringed water lily has yellow petals with fringed edges. The leaves are rounded, with wavy edges, measuring up to 10 centimeters in diameter, and are red-spotted on the underside.
The lily flowers from July to August and grows in water up to a depth of three meters.
Together, we can remove the fringed water lily from Lake Mälaren
In a joint project, we are working to combat the spread of the rapidly growing fringed water lily by covering the plants with light-tight material attached to floating frames. This causes the water lily to suffocate and die within one to two years. You can help by preventing the spread of the water lily and reporting any sightings in Lake Mälaren. Thank you for your help!
